Blacksmith • Artist • Instructor
Born and raised in the South Pacific jungles of Papua New Guinea, Josh's formative years were heavily influenced by the. beauty, diversity, survival, and magic of the unique peoples of this land. Moving to the United States as a young adult he took his passion for the outdoors and the ingenuity of off-grid living and started his own business doing high-end landscaping, stonework, and marine construction for clients along the rivers and lakes of Alabama.
As much as he enjoyed that work... there was a much deeper passion for art calling him that just couldn't be fully satisfied in the construction industry. He needed more creativity and freedom, so after moving West he eventually found himself in the mountain town of Flagstaff, Arizona where in 2018 finally found the courage to quit his job and follow his dream of being a full-time artist.
"At first I was just so happy to finally be able to create art that I was exploring everything that I could get my hands on. I was taking classes at the local college and dabbling with things on my own from ink-wash watercolor, to blacksmithing, to ceramics, to sculpting, to creating functional design furniture, and to teaching blacksmithing classes! The freedom was intoxicating and I was finally making a living while doing what I really loved. It was surreal. - Josh"
Eventually the dabbling turned into a business and just being an artist under the title "Joshua Meyer Art" didn't make sense, so The-Quench was created in 2022.
Josh is now a respected local artist who is commissioned by local residents, business owners, the city, the local University (Northern Arizona University), tourists passing through, and clients from all over the country and world. His blacksmithing classes are highly sought after and he enjoys sharing his passions and inspiring others to take chances on themselves by doing scary things and hopes that each of his students will leave with a little extra courage and that their soul will be quenched and satisfied like never before!
Flagstaff has been very good to Josh and although he still paints and dabbles on his own, the main focus of his business at "The-Quench" is as a blacksmith, artist, and instructor. His main services include forging all kinds of incredible blades, teaching soul quenching blacksmithing classes, and creating functional design/furniture using mainly steel, stone and wood.
